Swimming solo
I swim a couple of times a week and I rarely swim alone; always
sharing the pool with strangers. So when I went to Croatia, I
wanted to do things differently.
The first time I went out, I swam away from the pebbled beaches
and the tourists. I wanted to be by myself.
For the first few minutes, I was thinking about training, about
my breathing and strokes. But then I looked around and saw how
beautiful it was and I couldn't concentrate on anything but the
world around me. It completely cleared my mind.
I explored the island from the sea. There were times when I felt
like the only person in the world, like I was the first person to
ever see these tiny little beaches, the coves all deserted and
wild. Then I'd spot a tiny little fishing hut or a man casting his
rod out to sea and we'd nod to each other in recognition that we
were sharing something special.
As I followed the fish, I realised what swimming in its purest
form can do. Now whenever I'm in the water, I think of that day in
Hvar when I was at one with nature and remind myself of how lucky I
am to swim.
